Where can I find a safe, decent apartment near the University at Buffalo?

I’m looking to transfer to the University of Buffalo for Fall 2009. The trouble is that I have never been to Buffalo, and need to find a decent place to live that’s safe and really close to the campus. I don’t have a car, and I’m a 20 year-old female living on a modest budget. Can anyone provide me with a list of areas that I should take into consideration?

Thank you!

You aren’t going to like this answer, but it’s true…

Find out which campus you are going to be spending most of your time on. Most likely it will be the Amherst Campus. If that’s the case, there is really no off-campus housing that you can get to without a car. They have built a lot of apartment right on campus, but I’d guess that they aren’t cheap.

There are OK areas to live off of the Main St. campus (although a lot fewer than it used to be). You can walk to the Main St. campus and take a shuttle bus to Amherst. Realize if you do this that you will walk for 15-20 minutes to get to a shuttle bus that runs every half an hour and takes 20 minutes to go between campuses – in other words, you’ll have an hour commute (one-way). Plus walking 15-20 minutes in November – March in Buffalo stinks.

There aren’t really apartment complexes near the Main St. campus, it is all apartments in houses. Stay north and west of the campus (The areas with Windermere blvd and Capen is a little nicer, but not spectacular. DO NOT RENT OFF OF BAILEY AVENUE south of the campus. I wouldn’t even rent between Bailey and Main St. any longer.

Again, I’d recommend the on campus apartments on the Amherst Campus, especially if your classes are going to be there.

good luck!

PS – I really liked Buffalo, especially when I went to grad school there.
