Bovine Colostrum & The Performance Horse
Bovine colostrun is a highly nutritious food containing many bioactive molecules that help prevent disease, overall good health, recovery and healing. Colostrum supplementation increases lean body mass, improves muscular strength, increases endurance & capacity. Colostrum also speeds recovery from injury or illness.
What Does This Mean?
Your horse will train harder, longer and recover faster thus increasing its overall level of performance. Further, the International Olympic Committee considers bovine colostrum a food and thus it is an accepted nutritional supplement.
A critical aspect of horse performance is overall good health, especially when a horse is to perform at its maximal level. Colostrum has been shown in clinical trials to help prevent and treat disease. Disease starts in the gut and this is where colostrum supplementation acts.
What Is In Colostrum?
Colostrum contains immunoglobulins antibodies that hunt down, fight and destroy germs. It also employs growth factors, maturity & development of tissues involved with healing & recovery. Immune factors regulate the immune response, augment the actions of antibodies, control inflammation and recovery
The primary cause of foal mortality is due to partial or complete failure of passive transfer (FPT) of immunity – in a study involving some 2,092 horses and ponies it was found that some 416 or 20% of these animals suffered from some type of immunological disorder most commonly being FPT in 228 cases or 10.9%. Clinical evidence suggests that bovine colostrum may be of benefit in prevention of FPT.
The leading cause of death in horses is colic, which can affect the horse at any stage of their life. Performance horses are more susceptible to colic
Bovine colostrum has been shown to promote gut health and as such may afford protection from colic. 3 independent studies conducted in the USA, Ireland, England revealed ~ 50% of all foals had stomach & gut ulcers. Approximately 90% of the racehorses have stomach & gut ulcers. Colostrum has been shown to be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal injury. Furthermore, colostrum has been shown to be beneficial in treating ulcerative conditions and diseases of the gut.
Colostrum benefits
- Increased lean body mass
- Improved muscular strength
- Increased endurance & capacity
- Speeds recovery & healing process
- Train harder, longer, and recover faster thereby increasing respective level of athletic performance
Summary
Colostrum is a very complex mixture containing many bioactive substances that have yet to be fully appreciated. Among these substances so far identified are immunoglobulins, growth factors, immune factors and antioxidants. In regard to the competing horse, it has been shown that colostrum is an effective, safe, and legal supplement, which can have a very positive influence on performance. All colostrum is good but New Zealand bovine colostrum is best because it is the most potent in protection against disease.
