I found a safe deposit box key belonging to my deceased father. How do I trace it?
My brother and I tried the local banks at the time of his death, but gave up. But I came across the key again and now I’m really intrigued. I remember visiting the box with him as a child, so I know it exists…There are two codes and “Yale” and “For Mosler only” on the sides…Any help would be appreciated…
I have a will, a death certificate, and legal documents proving I am executor of the estate. I just need to know which bank! It’s been too long to look at his bank records; he died 10 years ago.
Yale and Mosler are the names of lock companies. Most banks have Yale and Mosler locks on safe deposit boxes, on safes, on lockboxes, and on other safekeeping areas.
Tracing a safe deposit box by a box key is next to impossible if you don’t know what city the bank is in.
Furthermore, appearing at a bank with asafe deposit box key would not get you entry to the box…no bank would just give you access to the box just because you had the key.
You’ll need to establish what bank it is, and then prepare to get buried in paperwork to establish your right to the property that’s in the box.
