moving from NC to NY to work in the metrotech in brooklyn…….where should i live???
i’m making a move from NC to Brooklyn in a few months to work for Chase in the metrotech center. i don’t know a damn thing about NY so i’m hoping i can get some educated opinions about a fun, safe and affordable place to live that’s close to or an easy commute to my job. i’m not aware of NY traffic, public transportation or anything else that makes the area unique so please be specific when making suggestions. i’m african american, single and my salary is $55 grand per year……don’t really know how far that stretches in NY as apposed to NC. i’ve heard that rent along with everything else is really expensive up there. i’ve heard manhattan is too expensive so i’m not even considering that. most people have suggested areas in brooklyn and queens. do you agree?….disagree? please tell why and explain what you think is the best move for me. this will be my first time in a big city so try to be specific in your suggestions and reasoning. thanks a lot for your responses.
I worked in the Metrotech building when I was in my early 20′s and I think I was only making about 36K a year at the time. I had my own apartment in Brooklyn. You can expect to pay anywhere from 800-1100 a month for a one bedroom in a safe neighborhood. Living in Brooklyn would be your best bet as far as a short commuting time. On a 55K a year salary, you can definitely afford to rent an apartment, get a car, and live comfortably. And the subway can get you to and from work relatively quickly for only $4 each day.
