Pennzoil Platinum or Castrol Syntec?
I was told by someone that they’re both great oils for keeping an engine close to original but that castrol kept a more consistant pressure during higher revs than the pennzoil. I have a 3.0L V6 2005 Mazda 6 that uses 5w-20.
Also, I’m interested in the Pennzoil Ultimate or Castrol Edge but is it safe to use a different weight oil in order to use these?
Every new car in the world delivered from the manufacturer which has synthetic motor oil in the crankcase happens to be Mobil1. Your car company has chosen 5W-30 for several good reasons. The motor has been machined and clearanced for the use of 5W-20 multi-weight oil.
80% of all engine wear occurs during hot and cold starts. It’s to your oil pumps advantage to force the greatest volume of lubricant to frictional surfaces quickly. The thicker the oil the slower the oil pumps. 5W-20 cools the moving parts more rapidly and efficiently as increased flushing action carries heat away faster. Your motor will make more power and fuel economy as the oil pump turns easier.
Think about this before arbitrarily switching to a thicker high viscosity motor oil: If you have well water what would happen of the well were filled with 5W-30 motor oil and you hooked 100 feet of hose outside your house. Holding a stop watch in your hand, jot down the time it would take to fill an empty 55 gallon oil drum. Now ponder the thought how long it would take for your water pump to force any grade of higher viscosity motor oil into the same 55 gallon drum. The fact is the higher the viscosity the longer it would take to fill the drum.
The oil system in your motor works exactly the same way. The thicker the oil the slower it circulates from the pump through the system and back to the pan. “Moore’s Law” doesn’t apply to oil viscosity.
You may or may not be intrested to know that the Joe Gibbs NASCAR team uses 0W for qualifying laps, 0W-20 when restrictor plates are used on super speedways and 5W-20 when the power robbing restricter plates are not between the intake manifold and carburetor. Your wondering why I bothered to add this: If an 875 horsepower motor can run 500 – 600 miles @ 8,500 – 9,500 RPM, surely 5W-20 would be perfectly fine to use in a street car that’s being operated in a sane fashon.
