how can I dispose of computers without making personal info vulnerable?
I understand that certain info remains stored on computer, but I have several old pcu’s which I must get rid of. What do I need to do to make my personal data safe. I live in UK, don’t know if that makes a difference. Grateful for any useful advice.
Typically, formatting or deleting files wont remove the information completely. it just marks the files inaccessable and available for overwrite. People who chose to Install special Undelete software would be able to recover typically 90% of your drive.
options available:
1. You can physically destroy the hard disc. Thus making it…pretty much destroyed.
2. You can download Free Drive Wipe applications such as Eraser (http://sourceforge.net/projects/eraser/) which rewrite the contents and the slack space (free space) of your Hard drive.
They also enable you to choose how to over write the data, from one single overwrite to DoD (Department of Defence) standards which is 7 passes with random strings of data
How the second option works:
If you think of your hard drive as having “layers” of data, The top layer is current accessable information, below that is old content deleted and below that older content still. By adding more and more layers to the information (overwriting) with every pass it becomes more and more difficult to retrieve (as theirs a lot more content above it) – The easiest analogy I can give is an archaeological dig.
