Why would white patchy areas come to the surface after staining a piece of unfinished furniture?
About two years ago I bought a pie safe in an unfinished furniture store. I presume the wood is pine, but it was not stated on the hang tag.We finished it using Minwax in a light oak.It looked very nice when fininshed. Now white patches are coming to the surface. We are wondering, what did we do wrong? Thanks in advance for your answers.
Pine, Fir and many soft woods are notorious for this. Using a prestain wood conditioner will reduce the # of these spots but won’t always eliminate them completely. Usually the spots are due to a change in wood density. The other thing that could have caused this is water. If a drop of water fell on the wood and raised the grain between the final sanding and the stain being applied it would show up as a light spot. The water thing applies to both softwoods and hardwoods. If you have only stained the piece and you have no ambition to repair the spots I would strongly recomend using a lacquer or polyurethane clear coat on it for protection.
