someone help a teen with her money?
So im 16 i just got my part time job about 3 weeks ago. I need tips to help me save money. I already do small things to help save money like save change in a piggy bank. But for now im just gonna ask for advice pay check to pay check. This week I already spent 93 bucks on clothes. But i thought it was a good deal because i got 25 dollars off on alot of clothes, and shoes i was going to buy anyway. Also im getting 35 bucks in two weeks that i let my dad borrow and im gonna save that. Im thinking im gonna get atleast 200 for my paycheck, but im just gonna say 150 to be safe. So i have to pay my dad 83 dollars. So that leaves me with about 60 dollars. Theres also gonna be a pow-wow alot of my friends are going to and i want to go to that. It cost maybe 8 dollars to get in and then my dads making me pay half for him. So thats 48 dollars left i could spend 24 dollars and save 24. Do YOU think this is a good plan?
Here’s a way that really works. It works when you are in college, and you can use it for the rest of your life. Every week when you get your paycheck, before you do ANYTHING else with it, you automatically put twenty percent of your paycheck into a savings account. That money is invisible to you. As far as you are concerned, that money is gone. Think of it as taxes. Think of it as a bill that must be paid. That 20% is NOT PART OF YOUR INCOME. It goes into a savings account, where you will not touch it for any reason except in the event of the most dire catastrophe (or else to buy the thing you are saving for).
The other 80% is your “living income.” You can spend that 80% however you like, on anything that you want. But you don’t ever touch the 20%. The 20% is sacred.
After you have done this for about a year, you will forget that the 20% was ever a part of your income, and, like taxes that are deducted each week, you will learn to get along without it. Saving becomes easy. TRUST ME in a few years (like . . . right after you get out of college), you will be pretty glad that you learned how to save money.
When I was in college (I graduated last year), I also used another trick to keep myself from spending too much money on small things: I bought small things (candy, movie tickets, pizza, etc) using only cash. Whenever I got my paycheck I would cash it at the campus cashier’s office and put all the large bills (50s and 100s) into my savings account. Anything left over (usually about $25) I would put into my pocket, and that would be my spending money for the week.
Good luck.
