What to do when your studs are not 16″ on center?
I want to hang a small wall safe that will contain a pistol (with fingerprint reader hidden behind a painting.) I need to mount it in the corner on my side of the bed. This location is critical , so unfortunately I can’t put it somewhere else.
Anyhow my corner also has a sliding glass door nearby and for some reason the studs are close (like 10 inches on center near the door and 21 on center on the other side. So the safe was built 14 3/8 inches wide, but the studs are 20.1/8 (inside to inside) inches apart; so how do I best fill the space yet keep strength structurally? Can I attach a 4×4 to one stud and a 2×4 on the other one? That would eat up 5 of the 5.75, is that enough or should I do a 1×4 also to the side with the added 2×4 ? Would the added boards need to go to the floor or can I just attach small pieces a little longer than the safe? How would you handle this?
Oh also, the safe will then be lag bolted to whatever I build.
Thanks for your help.
Cut the hole the size you need, 1 1/2″ away from one stud. Insert 20″ 2×4′s horizontal through the hole and screw to studs using angle brackets. Install vertical pieces, scabbing to one side that is 1 1/2 away from stud, angle brackets on both sides.
