Why Laptop Security Software Is Critical Even If Your Industry is Exempt From The Red Flag Rules
What are the Red Flag Rules?
The Red Flag Rules demand that businesses and organizations put in place a written identity theft prevention program in order to discover the presence of warning signs, known as “red flags”, of potential instances of identity theft. Certain small businesses and many professionals have been deemed exempt from The Red Flag Rules. Physicians, lawyers, dentists, pharmacists, accountants, nurses, social workers and other service providers will not be considered “creditors” under the classification of the Act. Since most small businesses and professionals do not extend credit or maintain accounts in the usual sense they are not considered primary targets for identity theft.
Red Flag Exempt Industries Still Need To Manage Identity Theft Risks
Even if your industry is exempt from the Red Flag Rules, you cannot relax on security. An area where personal and business security can and has been often breached is through laptop computers. Portability is what makes laptops so convenient and popular, but portability is also what makes laptops so vulnerable. There are definite things you can do to keep laptops safe and secure.
Some physical things you can do include not advertising that you are carrying a laptop computer. Computer cases are obvious and targets of thieves. Security experts recommend carrying your laptop in a padded briefcase or suitcase. When on the road never let your laptop computer out of your site, not even for a second. And, if you have to leave your laptop computer behind, you don’t leave it in checked luggage or in your vehicle, you leave it with a responsible party. Use physical security devices such as locks, alarms and laptop security software. Keep your computer locked and alarms set in your office.
Physical security is essential, but for full peace of mind laptop security software is critical. A popular and effective strategy is to subscribe to a security suite. When you open email, visit websites, use instant messaging, download files and software, make online purchases, and click on things that say “click here”, you need to know that you are protected from viruses, malware and other harmful things. Plus there are computer criminals out there trying to steal information used in identity theft and other cyber crimes.
Security Management For Laptop Computers Is An Ongoing Critical Issue
In addition to protection from virus’s and malware laptop security software, many packages offer file encryption, the ability to remotely monitor a thief’s activities and to remotely destroy files – and even restore the files when your laptop computer is recovered.
Many see the Red Flag Rules as an important step in ID theft protection, but it doesn’t mean we can let our guard down when it comes to laptop security software.
