which is the safer car for my family – one with a 5 star safety rating or a 4 star one in a larger size?
presumably ANCAp NCAP eurocap stars are awarded for cars that perform well within each class. but what about between classes – I heard that the bigger the car the safer it is for its occupants – and the converse….
Side impact tests can be compared between classes, as the tests (at least those conducted by the IIHS, but I think this holds true for NCAP/ANCAP/Euro NCAP as well), simulate a pickup truck or SUV hitting the side of the vehicle. Front-impact crash tests, however, simulate only a single-car crash. Therefore, they don’t take into account the value of weight in a two-car crash. You’re right that a larger, heavier car with a larger crumple zone and more momentum at a given speed will do better, all things being equal, than a smaller car. The IIHS did a series of crash tests to demonstrate this. They took minicars that had all achieved the highest possible rating of Good in single-car crash tests at 40mph and crashed them into mid-sized cars from the same automakers. Each of the minicars went from the highest rating of Good to the lowest rating of Poor – and that was into midsized cars, not huge SUVs. It’s common sense that size wins in a crash like that, but the degree to which it is important is surprising. All told, you’re going to be safer in a modern (this generation or last) car that is at least mid-sized. Take a look at the IIHS as an easy-to-use source of information on how cars do in a variety of crash tests. It’s not just about size – I’d take a new small car over an mid-nineties large car – and you also want to look for features like Electronic Stability Control that will keep you out of a crash in the first place. But in a collision between two cars, having a larger crumple zone up front and more mass does make a difference.
