How to Baby Safe your Home
So many of the world’s problems and misconceptions can be avoided by simply reversing roles with your neighbors. Seeing situations through the eyes of another can deliver solutions on a civil and respectable level and achieve appreciation and understanding of each other’s situations.
The same is to be said when it comes to making your home safe for babies to roam. Get down on all fours and enter the world of “if I can grab it I will stick it in my mouth”, and “If I find a hole I will stick my finger or something else in it”.
Seriously, climb down onto all fours and crawl around on the floor as a baby would. Look around for a few moments and you will find yourself within a baby’s playground. There are dozens of bright, colorful and shiny objects to play with. Unfortunately, they are extremely dangerous.
The bright, shiny and colorful objects happen to be light sockets; extension cords and that bright red pen that rolled underneath your desk about a year ago that you thought you have lost.
The first course of action is to perform an initial inspection of the grounds. Look in every corner and under every piece of furniture for any loose items that may hurt a child.
After your initial round up, the following seven areas are to be addressed:
Appliance, furniture, & electronics safety: What child doesn’t love to pull them selves up onto furniture and chairs as to say, “look dad, I did it”. Even the smallest of end tables can be pulled over and injure a child within seconds. Secure any small shelves or tables with furniture and appliance doors can be secured with straps and locks. Electrical safety: Outlet plug caps are very inexpensive and easy to use. Go crazy. Plug one in absolutely every outlet you can find, high and low. Have a contest with each other to see who can plug the most caps in.Smoke & other detectives: Regular battery checks should be performed on a regular basis however, if you are aware of a child or children visiting, it won’t hurt to perform an extra battery test.Blinds / window straps or cords: Take notice and secure cords and straps of window blinds, they create a tremendous strangulation hazard. Also, the window openings can be restricted to only a couple of inches by utilizing stoppers within the window tracks.Chemicals & hazardous materials: There isn’t much need for explanations with this one, only common sense. Take a complete and accurate tour around your home prior to your guest arriving. Carry with you a box or bag and empty all hazardous materials into the container that can’t be secured within a cabinet. Then take the container filled of hazardous materials and secure them away from the children.Toilet: You may or may not need this one however; you may acquire a lid lock if desired.Door safety: There are literally hundreds of door locks, latches and hooks to choose from. Keep in mind that one-piece doorstops are better then two-piece doorstops. Doors that will remain open are to use slide-on door guards.
