Would you recommend Chico, Ca for a young couple?
We are a young couple, both 25 years old and looking to locate somewhere in the Northern Ca area. We have been researching and have come across Chico. It seems to be a safe area with jobs available and close to nature. I have read that Chico is a college town with lots of partying, and we are done with that part of our lives, but would still love going out to eat, shopping around town, etc. We would like to find decent jobs and start a family and meet others around our age in the area.
Does Chico sound right for us? Any other info or recommendations?
personal experience please!
We grew up in Red Bluff, CA, 40 miles northwest of Chico and went to Chico State in the late 1950s so we have seen tremendous growth. We go back to visit every once in a while and see positives and negatives, of course. The positives are the relatively reasonable priced nice homes all over. (This may depend on where you are living now.) The college adds a lot of cultural and entertainment opportunities and, one would assume, job opportunities. The restaurant scene has greatly improved/expanded in last few years. There is a great hotel that was refurbished and has a very nice dining room. There are a few great coffee houses and good bookstores. One of the best parts of the area is the Bidwell Park which is a huge, natural park with Little and Big Chico Creek swimming “holes”. It is, I believe, the largest city park in the U.S. Unfortunately, in the 60′s they built an elevated section of the freeway through the park! Now the negative. The traffic on the Esplanade which is the main north-south artery is unbelieveable certain times of the day because of the stoplights and tons of cars. (We live in Santa Rosa….which is much, much larger and this rivaled our city!) We were dismayed at the condition of old downtown as this is the “where-it-should-be-and-used-to-be” area. There were quite a few empty storefronts with filthy windows, dirty sidewalks and just a general rundown feeling. There is a Thursday night market downtown in the summer which is kind of fun. It can get pretty raucous with the college kids at times, but the college has really cracked down on celebrations and the fraternity parties….no alcohol allowed any longer on site.
Lastly, you have to enjoy, or at least tolerate the summer heat. Remember, your utility bills will be as high (or higher) in the summer as the winter. Why not try to stay in a motel for a week/ten days and see what you think this summer?
Good luck, Judy
PS: Be sure to go into Madison Bear Gardens pub to size up the college fun….they treated us well last year and we were 67 and 70!
