How safe is it to swim in a lake?

I get a little grossed out sometimes when I’m in a lake because it isn’t clear water. The lakes I have swam in are almost brown/black colored and you can’t see anything in the water. I know it is safe because people go in it a lot and go on boats, but the fact that it isn’t clear blue water makes me a little uneasy to be in it. Is it weird of me to feel this way? I don’t get really grossed by water in a pool because, yeah, there are a lot of germs and stuff, but at least I can see through the water. I think lake water is much worse because of all the fish, bugs, and animals, plus you don’t know what people could be putting in there. I’m just wondering if I have anything to worry about or if I’m crazy for thinking lakes are gross.

Nope, I feel the same way!

Also, clear pools have chlorine which kills bacteria – lakes don’t. Just ask the 14-year-old boy that’s currently in the hospital being eaten alive by a rare bacteria on the floor of the lake he swam in. O_O
