Traffic and transport construction jobs on the rise
1. The industry
The transport industry employs around 2.3 million people in the UK across some 196,000 companies. Worth over £75 billion to our economy it ensures goods, services and people can move as efficiently as possible.
The industry can be split into three core sectors; surface, sea and air transport.
Traffic and transport construction jobs of all kinds are essential to preventing long-term disruption across these areas. Without traffic and transport construction jobs, TfL (Transport for London), for example, wouldn’t be able to maintain its train or tube lines.
There are excellent opportunities in Traffic and transport construction jobs. Because of the size of the industry it has a number of diverse career opportunities available, ranging from operational, distribution and planning roles, to customer service and warehousing.
2. What do traffic and transport construction jobs involve?
Traffic construction jobs are a key requirement to the smooth operation of the countries transport systems. Opportunities involve construction work and building services to maintain facilities such as airports and train stations – as well as the construction of new ones.
Civil engineering is a core element to many traffic and transport construction jobs too. Projects can involve anything from designing and creating a new bridge or road, to developing a new harbor to increase sea freight – so there’s plenty of variety with transport construction jobs.
Some roles require shift work. This can mean working evenings, nights and possibly weekends. Depending on the role, travel may also be required either locally, nationally or in some cases internationally
3. The current climate
Traffic and transport construction jobs have not escaped the effects of a global economic downturn. However, rising fuel costs have seen a huge surge in the numbers using public transport – a shift that has steadied the waters.
This is because transport construction jobs carry out all the necessary maintenance required to keep public transport safe and running. Many rail and bus services are also undergoing significant expansion and refurbishment in the run up to London’s 2012 Olympics. This is creating a number of transport construction jobs, from engineering to project management and transport modelling.
Traffic and transport construction jobs are key during the run up to 2012 games. Billions of pounds are being invested into improving the Capital’s transport facilities. This includes the ‘Olympic Javelin’ – a 12-carriage train that will link King’s Cross/St Pancras to the heart of London in just seven minutes.
With an increasing number of public-private partnerships, there’s a lot of private sector money being invested into building and operating infrastructure too. This has helped push plans for new infrastructure forward, creating more traffic and transport construction jobs much sooner than if public money was relied upon.
4. What will employers look for?
If you’re interested in a traffic and transport construction job, you’ll need to know what area of construction suits you best. A technical degree in engineering, for example, may be mandatory for some transport construction jobs, but many roles require a diverse range of skilled people from all kinds of backgrounds.
Employers are looking for you to be a team player who shows willing to succeed. If you want to stand out from the other applicants, demonstrate multi-tasking and problem-solving skills – great assets to have in the industry.
