Would you pay an extra $100 bucks a month for rent in order to feel safer?

There’s a nice townhouse for rent in a very nice neighborhood but I’d have to pay 100 bucks extra a month for rent. Would you pay an extra $100 just to feel safe? My current neighborhood is filled with gangs and thugs. We’ve gotten our bikes stolen twice out of our private fenced in back yard. (They had a Brinks security cable on them too) The SWAT team was also next door doing a drug raid earlier this year.

I would pay more without a doubt for safety*

Vacation Planning – Keeping Your House Safe While You’re On Vacation

Many families will be looking for a nice little vacation this spring, particularly in areas of the country where school districts go on spring break. Unless you’re fortunate to have a house sitter lined up, you will be like many families and will be leaving you homes empty for a week or two to enjoy a little down time. A family’s vacation time shouldn’t be hampered by thoughts of leaving the family home unattended for an extended period of time. You certainly don’t want to have your home burglarized while you’re away, but there are several things you can do to seriously decrease the risk of this happening. Here are just a few of the many safety tips that you can implement:

A house sitter is actually the number one recommendation. Getting a family member, a trusted friend or co-worker, someone from your church or social club, or even a trusted neighbor is a great way to keep burglars out of your house. The last thing a house burglar wants to run into when he thinks he’s alone is someone in the house, or evidence someone is there. Making it difficult by having someone staying at your house is the number one deterrent.

If you can’t manage a house sitter during your vacation, arrangements must be made for your mail, newspapers, and other deliveries. You can have your mail and newspaper stopped by simply contacting the appropriate agency or company and halting service for the period of time you expect to be away. If you prefer not to do this, then make arrangements with a neighbor, friend or family member to collect these things each day. Experienced burglars look for newspapers building up on the porch, or mail stuffed into an overflowing mailbox. Avoid any special package deliveries during that time, or make arrangements to have them collected or delivered elsewhere.

If you’re having your mail and newspapers collected because you’ve not been able to arrange for a house sitter, then it’s very important to have lights, television, and radios on timers, set to turn on and off at random times. Again, it’s important to give the appearance that someone is home. Burglars will choose a house with no signs of life over a house that has every appearance that someone is home, even if they suspect no one is. Timers are relatively inexpensive and can control several devices at a time, each turning on and off at different times. Keeping burglars off their guard is a very good way of keeping them out of your house.

The best precaution you can take, however, is to have a monitored home security alarm system professionally installed in your house. By letting the monitoring company know your vacation schedule, they can be on high alert for any disturbance at your house. The professional dispatchers are so highly skilled at their jobs, they can actually have emergency response units on their way faster than dialing 911.

Planning ahead prior to your next vacation is the first best step you can take to ensure you’ll be returning to a home just the way you left it.
