How safe is late winter driving in the mountains between southern Germany and Northern Italy?
I am planning a vacation in Italy, Austria and Germany in May. I was hoping to rent a car, but am wondering about driving conditions in the mountains at that time of year. I can’t seem to find any resources online that talk about this issue. Anyone have any first hand knowledge?
I live in northern Italy. In May, you shouldn’t have much problem with weather. It’s generally a good period to be out exploring. There aren’t so many tourists on the roads as later in the summer.
A bigger issue than the weather is making sure you have the Austrian tax sticker for the car you’ll be driving. you need this if you’re going to be driving on the Autobahn in Austria – there’s a substantial fine if you get caught on the Autobahn without it. You can get one at the border crossings in the gas stations and at many tabak shops in Austria.
