Regarding LATCH, why do most vehicles NOT have the lower anchors?

I would like to use the LATCH system for my child’s car seat; however, I would have to have the car seat located on either side, not in the center which is the safest place.

Although all three seating postions have the top tether anchors, only the two outer seating positions have the lower anchors.

Why is this? How have you dealt with this?

I am concerned that the seat belt is the only thing securing my child’s car seat. He will be moving out of his infant car seat and into a convertible car seat very soon. He is and will continue to be rear-facing until at least April of 2008.
The top “tether” anchors are required in for all 3 rear-seating positions; however, I am referring to the “lower” anchors.

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer.

LATCH is not inherently safer than a seatbelt, it’s just supposed to be easier. Personally I trust a seatbelt that is tested up to a 300lb person sitting in it than LATCH which is only tested to 40-48lbs.

You should put the seat where it is installed better.

Traffic counts on Portland’s Hawthorne Bridge — there will never be too many bikes
Wherein I watch the cars back up and the cyclists whiz past and come to understand the bike commute is part of the solution to the city’s traffic problems.
