what would be the best/safest place to do business in Baton Rouge or New Orleans?
If you know the Baton Rouge or New Orleans area, I will be going thereabouts and want to stay in the safest place possible with as many businesses, golf courses and restaurants around as possible. Can you give me good suggestions? Traveling alone, so safety is key
The first answer if clearly from someone who doesn’t know what they are talking about. They claim they worked briefly in New Orleans after Katrina and viciously blast not just NOLA but the whole state. Not different from someone who visited New York on September 12, 2001 and complained that Manhattan was covered in dirt & debris and everyone was upset.
The best place to stay in New Orleans to be surrounded by restaurants is the French Quarter. There are many, many hotels and you should check sites like Expedia & Orbitz for options. Also check: www.frenchquarterhotels.com
There are also many, many hotels in the city center outside the FQ and all of the major chains are well represented.
Note that many of the FQ hotels cater primarily to leisure travelers so make sure they have what you need if you have any special requirements. The Westin Canal Place may be a good choice for you as it is a modern construction (most of the FQ hotels are in historic buildings). The Westin Canal Place is attached to an upscale shopping mall (Saks, Brooks Brothers, etc.) with its own parking garage and should be a business-friendly hotel. Another good choice would be the Omni Royal Orleans.
You don’t need a car to get around downtown New Orleans and there are lots of taxis.
About crime in New Orleans – the city made the news in 2008 because drug dealers were/are killing each other and the still-reduced population made the murder rate go up (rate = population divided by crimes). Ohter crime is at or below the national average for citys. About 98% of serious violent crime in NOLA happens > within < the illegal drug community and almost all of the other 2% are "domestic" incidents. That doesn't make the crimes OK but the average resident or visitor doesn't have to worry about it. All anyone neeeds to do to be safe in New Orleans is use the same basic common sense required in every city in the world.
I am not really familiar with Baton Rouge, but it doesn't really have a city center and you will need a car. There are also lots of hotels in BR. One to look at is the high-rise Marriott on I-10. It is in a semi-suburban location and in an area with a few restaurants and a Barnes & Noble book store.
