Safe,reliable,low maintenance vehicle with good MPG’s for a college student?

I’m moving to Atlanta for college. I drive my Uncle’s truck now(he’s in the military so I’m keeping it up for him). He’ll be back soon so I need my own car so I can return his truck. But I also need one that is easy for a college student to keep up while working full time and going to school full time. I need something reliable. My Mom offered me a chance to ‘buy’ her 2007 Camry but in light of recent Toyota incidents,I don’t want a Toyota. I don’t care about the year or none of that. I don’t want anything from them,too many future and current headaches.

I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima and it does really well for back and forth driving for me. I also had a 1998 Altima (before I got hit) and that did really well too. But I like the Maxima better
