An allergy refers to an exaggerated reaction by our body immune system in response to contact with certain foreign substances usually harmless. But, in a person whose body is prone to allergies, they are recognized by the body and the immune system is turned on. Allergy-producing substances are called as ‘allergens’. Allergens cause the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody that all of us have in small amounts. Allergic persons, however, produce IgE in abnormally quantities. Normally, this antibody is important in protecting us from parasites, but not from other allergens.

The word allergy is derived from the Greek words “allos,” meaning different and “ergos,” meaning work or action. Although allergies can develop at any age, the risk of developing it is genetic. Spring allergies are caused by pollen from trees, which pollinate between January to April, depending on the climate and location. Some of them that cause severe allergies include oak, olive, elm, birch, ash, hickory, sycamore, maple, cypress, and walnut and also some weeds.

Grass pollen is typically the main cause of late spring and early summer allergies which are highest at these times. It is also enhanced if someone is mowing the lawn or lying in the grass. Contact with grass can result in itching and hives in people who are allergic to grass pollen. Grasses are usually named as northern and southern grasses. Northern grasses like timothy, rye, orchard, sweet vernal, red top, and blue grasses are common in colder climates. Southern grasses like bermuda grass are present in warmer climates.

- Avoid freshly cut grass and mowing the lawn
- Machine dry bedding and clothing. Pollen may collect in laundry if it is hung outside to dry
