How dangerous is San Francisco’s Excelsior District?
I know this question has been addressed in previous threads, but they were all posted a few years ago. Is the Excelsior getting better? I moved into an apartment here without doing very much research, and I’m starting to wonder if it was the right choice. Are there any good spots to see? Is it safe to live here?
It’s one of the worst neighborhoods in San Francisco, but… it’s not really that bad. It really is mostly just relatively low income families. The majority of the crime is property crime and teenagers/20-somethings selling drugs and crime related to that . Just don’t get involved in the latter (or if you do, carry through with everything), nor act scared/repulsed by it, and you’re in the clear. Also, not the best neighborhood to dress in designer clothes and count your money in the open. Again, low income families, teens/young adults wanting more – the root of the crime. Most of the violence there is very targeted and not random at all. Not the kind of place you have to worry about being randomly shot or anything.
Still, should you be scared living there? No. I go through occasionally (recently walking through at 3am) and have never had a problem or felt like I was in any danger. It’s mostly a quiet, working class family kinda neighborhood. In some ways, it’s one of the most laid-back, homey, close-knit neighborhoods in the city.
