Are security boxes safe to use in motels in Canada/Usa?
can i trust these motels with my valuables eg like passport/cash/travellers cheuqes
Are you talking about the security safe behind the check-in desk? Or the ones provided in the room?
Obviously the room is the best and safest choice.
A few notes- at least in the US an innkeeper is NOT responsible for any valuables not left in their safe behind the check in desk. So if your motel room gets broken into you can’t claim that your passport, cash, etc was stolen and demand compensation.
Once you turn over the valuables to the innkeeper they are responsible for the safekeeping of them- however that might be small consolation as you wait to have your passport replaced.
Last thing is have several photocopies of your passport before you give it up. Also get a signed receipt from the innkeeper detailing EXACTLY what you are giving up (e.g. 1 Passport from the UK, #XXXX, $520.34 cash in US Dollars, Travellers Checks #X, Y, Z). When you get the items back verify that everything is still there BEFORE you leave the counter, and sign the receipt again that you received everything.
It might seem like a lot of documentation, but this will protect you in case the innkeeper loses your stuff or actually steals from you (which has happened at some places, in the past).
