Does anyone find the lack of security at Amtrak disconcerting?
I don’t ride it enough to really care that much but I have ridden it before and I do find it odd that there isn’t really any security. I’m a GA pilot and travel a lot commercially (aviation) and I know TSA gets a lot of bad press, but they are only out to keep people safe. Security in the aviation world was lacking before 9/11 and I’d hate to see a travesty on the rails have to happen in order to up security at a train station.
Well, no – if anyone really wanted to attack a train they could do it at any point on the tracks, either by leaving a bomb or firing an RPG at it, but trains travel at an altitude of 0 feet and are constrained by the signallers as to where they can go, so there is really very little that can go seriously wrong. On a couple of occasions in the 1970s trains were hijacked in the Netherlands, but all that happened was that the trains were stopped in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by the police until the hijackers surrendered. A bomb was once set off on a French high-speed train at 168 mph – the only effect was that a hole was blown in the side of the train, but the stability of the train was unaffected and it came to a halt safely shortly afterwards with no passenger injuries.
People can board trains at any number of stations, and putting airline-style security at each one would be hugely expensive, inefficient, and totally unnecessary. The question you need to ask is whether the security at airports is excessive and ineffective (how many terrorists have actually been caught since people have had to take their shoes off, and all the rest of the security theater we have nowadays? I think you’ll find the figure is a close approximation of zero.)
