What is the difference between a regular home safe and a gun safe?
I have found that regular home safes for storing documents and valuables are not recommended for storing firearms. I am looking for a small safe to store two handguns and saw a SentrySafe fingerprint safe at Costco that looked like it would work great but it is not recommended for firearms. The safe was made from fairly thin steel and was not very heavy. Do I need to get a solid steel safe? I have two kids (another on the way) so I need the safe to be very secure. I’m looking for one with a digital and/or fingerprint lock for quick access.
Firearms safes are usualy stronger, and have better locking mechanisms. They are usualy fire rated as well, where as document safes may or may not have a fire rating. Gun safes also usualy have dividers or racks to keep the guns cradled properly, but that is more for convienience. Buy what you can afford and are comfortable with. With a small safe, look for one you can screw or bolt to the floor from inside the safe to prevent someone from picking up the whole thing and walking off with it. But if you buy a safe that is not fire rated, don’t keep a loaded gun in the safe, for standard gun safety reasons, but also as ammunition boxed or lose may rupture in a fire but will not cause damage. Ammo chambered in the gun will fire if the safe reaches arround 500 farenheit and that round may penetrate a cheaper safe wall, endangering you and anyone who tries to help your family in case of a fire.
