Roof Rack or Trunk Rack for my Bike ?
I have Trek Road and Mercury /Mariner (SUV) vehicle with factory installed Roof-Rack. This the picture of my car
http://www.mercuryvehicles.com/mariner/exterior.asp
I am interested about this (Thule 969 Thruway 3-Bike Trunk Rack) at PerformanceBike
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23639&subcategory_ID=4412
My fear, I will lose the bike in the Interstate. Actually how safe and secure these “Trunk Racks” really are? The mount just “clips with the trunk”. Are they reliable or can cause a serious multi-car accident in the Highway, from fall off? What about the Bike and Vehicle paint? Is it safe for the paint? Have you used it (Trunk Rack) without any fall off incident?
I do not have Hitch Receiver. So the other Option will left is “Roof Rack”. I am 5’7″, how difficult would it be to load/unload the bike from SUV roof?
You can get a hitch receiver for your Mariner for less than $150. If you don’t want to do it yourself, you can go to U-Haul and have them install a hitch for you.
A hitch-mounted rack will be a lot more solid than the strap-retained trunk rack, and it will be a lot easier to load and unload than a roof rack.
I remember answering your earlier question about roof racks. All I can say is that my old ’96 Jeep Cherokee sits lower than your Mariner, and I already have a hard time loading my Yakima roof rack on the Jeep.
Emergency vehicle lighting for watercraft
Emergency lights can be hand-held flashlights of various colors and intensities, or they can be lights mounted on the vessels. Larger vessels like cruise ships or battleships are generally fitted with emergency vehicle lighting mechanisms that can function as warning lights to other vessels, or can be used to convey distress signals if necessity arises. However, even those who go out on smaller crafts for short durations should not neglect their emergency vehicle lighting arrangements.
People may take to water variously for search and rescue operations, for water sports, for fishing, for flora or fauna collection as part of researches, or just for entertainment. Even if either of these operations have been planned to be conducted only during daytime, the travelers must ideally have some provision for emergency vehicle lighting. Unexpected circumstances could force people to stay past evening. Even during daytime, the weather can turn foggy or cloudy without warning. Then too, emergency vehicle lighting could become a necessity.
Even small boats out on water should carry one or more waterproof flashlights for emergency vehicle lighting, should the need arise. One prime condition that these lights should satisfy is that they should be easily operable. Where the lights are equipped with different flash patterns and colors, the transition mechanism should be smooth and fast to ensure that they do the emergency lighting job satisfactorily. LED lights or strobe lights are available for mounting on different parts of a vessel. However, even if a boat has got mounted lights, the travelers should essentially carry additional waterproof and weatherproof flashlights for emergency vehicle lighting needs, since lights will often need to be used in various directions.
As in the case of lights used for emergencies on land, lights used for emergency vehicle lighting in water, whether mounted or handheld, should have various levels of brightness, different flash features, and should have color choices. Depending upon the distance at which the users expect the light to be seen, brightness variation would become necessary. Different flash patterns are necessary to signal variously in codes that are familiar to sailors and rescue workers.
Color variation is also very important in emergency vehicle lighting. For signaling other boats for help, red colored light is used. For fishing, green colored light is helpful. Those who are fishing in secluded areas like rock jetties, or in any familiar fishing spots where there are not many other boats with competing lights, green light is helpful in attracting bait and fish. Blue and green lights are believed to help night vision though there is some difference of opinion among users regarding this.
In short, anyone venturing out into water should equip himself with emergency vehicle lighting equipments with various functionalities for a safe and secure time out on waters.
