Question about aquarium, and fishes?
A friend bought for me two koi fish roughly about 5 inch long. I know koi’s are strictly pond fishes and that my pond is no more but my friend didn’t know about these. Up until the pond was demolished, I’ve never had fishes in fish tanks. My neighbor ha an unused fish tank still in good shape so they kindly gave it to me. Here’s the thing i dont know about aquariums. how many gallon of water can this fish tank be filled? Its roughly 3/4 the length of a bathtub.
Whats the max size for the koi to be kept in this tank until I really need a pond?
Also, I have two male bettas. The victor and the loser.
Since one of the two koi died, is it safe for me to keep the koi company with the betta that lost? The bettas fought, the one that lost was not aggresive.
1) You can fill an aquarium completely to the top.
2) minimum tank size for 1 koi should be at least 55 gallons, ideally
3) The Betta will be fine in there
Is it JUST the aquarium?
If so:
Find out what size it is (in gallons) from your neighbor.
After you know this you’ll have a little shopping to do…
- Gravel (1 pound of gravel for every gallon of water)
- Light of appropriate size
- Filter of appropriate size
- Fake plants, Your Koi will eat live ones
- Stress coat(this is a chemical that removes chlorine from the water)
- Flake food
Koi do not require a heater, as they are cold-water fish.

I need to set this straight. Shubunkin gold fish ARE NOT used as cheaper Koi. While they are both in the Carp family, and were both bred from Carp originally THEY ARE TWO SEPERATE TYPES OF FISH.
But I do agree on the point that you should get him(or her) a friend! Anything in the carp family really… which includes ALL types of Goldfish and Koi. And also African Clawed Frogs (regular and albino)
AND before someone says it… Male Bettas are only aggressive towards other Male Bettas.
