No, I would not live in one. I do not live in fear, and I do not myslef to close before the people and the world around me. I do love peace, quiet and solitude, and often I spent time in remote locations where there are no people. By example a few years ago I spent several months living near Cassiar (Since you mentioned mining towns abandoned), near the border with the Yukon. But I've never been in a position where my surroundings were deprived in every sense of the word other than most people would unwilling or reason to go. If I am in a remote location and someone else comes then I'm happy for the company. In Right now I live in Toronto and I never lock my door. The dangers of modern society are of no interest to me.
