Yes, the TCA (tile council of america) handbook’s acceptable installation practice will allow installation over a primed drywall. You can use mastic OR thinset, unless you work with a very knowledgable professional when buying your setting materials and get a low sag or high grab thinset I would recommend you use the mastic as it will help make your installation easier if you are inexperienced and it is pre-mixed.
