San Francisco Schools Fight Fat
Childhood obesity is at alarming levels in that county. Children in schools in San Francisco are no exception. Too much TV and video games, and too little time spent playing outdoors has led to an epidemic of health problems minor. It does not help that schools in San Francisco had to reduce funding of physical education over the years. But the school year 2007-2008 do something positive for him. Several schools in San Francisco will provide fresh salad bars, the options of whole grains and whole fruits and vegetables in their cafeterias.
Twenty-six schools in San Francisco from primary to secondary benefit half a million dollars in grants from the Office the Mayor and the Department of Children, Youth, and their families. It's a big deal. The fact that the school district did acknowledge the importance of nutrition in education is enormous. For decades public education has acted as if the only aspect of learning we should worry are the test results. The San Francisco Unified School District was forced to slash the arts, physical education, and anything that is not directly visible affect standardized tests.
How nutrition affects school students in San Francisco?
Teachers in schools in San Francisco know the achievement of a child lies in several factors: family environment, good nutrition and a good night's sleep a significant impact on the ability a student to pay attention and retain information. The fast food generation currently attending the San Francisco schools must be made aware how food choices will affect their health. But it's a pretty safe bet that the schools of San Francisco do not have much extra time daily to teach health classes. It's OK, they are now could be even better.
Schools need to lead by example. Just think of the message he sent the children to have soda in vending machines and options such as potato chips, ice cream and fat meals for lunch fare. Schools in San Francisco is an example that the rest of the nation needs to emulate. It is high time that schools look messages they send to our children.
What can schools in San Francisco Do?
While healthy school meals are a huge improvement for the San Francisco schools, the reality is that every public school district in the country is struggling to succeed. San Francisco schools experimented with salad bars with pilot programs in some schools last year. Hopefully other schools will follow in San Francisco this example next year. It is more expensive for schools in San Francisco to provide the freshest fare as canned vegetables and meat mystery? I am sure it is. But schools in San Francisco will recover the cost of children who are more likely to pay attention (diagnosis may ADD least), superior results, children who are less picky, and like the taste of fresh food.
